More Mobile Mischief

After realizing they shared a common ground, Tommy showed Annalise the fine art of the gate-shake this afternoon.

“Good thing Mommy & Daddy kept all of these outlet covers in place…”

Back to her old tricks.

“…Well, if I can’t mess with the power outlets, I suppose I can rewire Daddy’s speakers.”

Back at the bookshelf and already bored with the board books. Annalise went for one of Tommy’s titles, Peter\’s Chair by Ezra Jack Keats. It’s a great story about a little boy adjusting to his new sister being granted all of his babyhood belongings. Touché!

Busy reader/chewer

I found the caption on the back of the book amusing, considering who is holding the book.

Notice the caption on the back of the book?

On the Move

Annalise is mobile! She’s still not doing the traditional, up-on-all-fours crawl, but she can get around the family room and kitchen just fine.

Her first destination: the exit. She wriggled over to the baby gate and kept shaking it. It’s not that bad around here, chica! After she grew tired of clanging her tin cup against the bars, she sat up and tried to jimmy the lock on our DVD cabinet to the right.

She starts to crawl, and goes straight for the exit. It\'s not that bad around here!

Next stop, the “prison library.” She grabbed a few books off the shelf and thumbed through/gnawed at them for a while.

After attempting escape, she visited the prison library

Final pit stop on Tommy’s racetrack rug. We try to keep the Hot Wheels out of her reach, but Tommy’s lent her a few age-appropriate playskool cars upon which she can hone her driving skills.

My mother-in-law encouraged me to grow another set of eyes. I do believe I’ll need an extra pair now that Annalise is all over the place and curious about everything!

Brother encourages her to “BECOME ONE WITH THE TRACK.”

Big Sunday Breakfast

Sunday we enjoyed a very lazy morning and lounged in jammies until nearly noon. We made a big, lingering breakfast. We started with Cheerios and ended with Chocolate Chip Cookies.

Annalise chowed on favorites and new treats. She dined on baby-sized pancake pieces, quartered blueberries and egg yolk. She and I make a great team with eggs…I *try* to stick to the whites and she eats the yolk (no whites until she’s 12 months old).

Tommy saw me snapping a pic of his sister and insisted I commemorate his breakfast, too. He munched on silver-dollar pancakes, scrambled eggs and OJ.

None too amused when I pointed the lens in his general direction, our chef glared at me with a mouthful of syrupy cakes over the morning paper. If he drank the stuff, I’d say he needed some coffee!

James enjoys his pancakes. He does not enjoy having his photo taken so early in the morning.

When the tables turned I HID! No way would he get a shot of me that early in the morning! Annalise thought I was playing peek-a-boo and started to giggle.

Andrea hids from the camera. No way are you getting a look at her this early!

And here are the Chocolate Chip Cookies we ate after our real breakfast. Click on the link and try this doggone recipe. It’s well worth 36 tortuous hours of dough chilling.

Yes, we ate chocolate chip cookies for breakfast on Sunday. And they were GOOD!

I love Sundays!

Bowling Party

Strikes & Turkeys? More like Bumper Bowling and an occasional lucky Spare when three-year-olds are rolling the ball. Our neighbor, Mason, celebrated his third birthday at Red Rock Lanes near our house and much fun ensued.

Tommy really gets into his Cheetos. I think he ate an entire bowl in lieu of the tasty pizza. (Sorry ’bout the “see-food!)

Cheetos, anyone?

Daddy & Annalise look on. She looks grumpy in this pic, but she didn’t mind all the noise of the bowling alley and even snoozed in her stroller for a short time.

Our only shot of the birthday boy. Mason’s the guy with the cake beard. He had a blast and so did we!

Bedtime Smiles

We’ve managed to get Tommy & Annalise on a semi-similar schedule for nighttime. We eat dinner around 5:30 then try to hit the tub by 6:15 or so. After a very splashy bath (they really like to egg each other on in the tub, as you’ll see in this video: Tommy & Annalise Splash…our pleas for the splashing to stop were completely futile). James grabs Tommy and I take Annalise to pajama-up. Once moisturized with heavenly-scented baby lotion and zipped into their favorite jammies we meet up for wrestlemania in the hallway between their rooms. Lots of giggling, too!

Potty Training is EXHAUSTING

Wow. What an experience it is to teach a young child that diapers aren’t the only way to go. We decided it was time to pitch the Pull-ups over Fourth of July weekend and officially turn our kid into Captain Underpants. I found a program called 3 Day Potty Training and decided to give it a try…it cost less than another box of Pull-ups, so why not?

Friday morning we gathered all of Tommy’s Pull-ups and took them out with the trash. After waiting to hear its familiar rumble down the street, we greeted the garbage truck (one of our trusty sanitation engineers was actually a lady!) and Tommy told them he was done with diapers and he didn’t need them anymore, sporting only his tighty whiteys, a t-shirt and a smile.

We went back inside and got down to business. Underpants all day AND night. I shuddered at the thought. James and I told Tommy every 30 seconds, “Tell Mommy/Daddy when you need to go potty.” I think I still mumble this in my sleep. And when we weren’t reminding him to use the toilet, we were asking him, “Are your underpants still dry?” Then praising the heck out of him every time they were.

Water. Juice. Capri Sun. Capri Sun. Capri Sun. We loaded him up with the liquids and let nature take its course. With every success he earned a sticker, a treat (M&Ms are his poison) and more atta-boys than we can count.

I made Tommy a chart in the bathroom so he could keep track of his progress. Each time he successfully went potty he got one sticker of his choice. For a poop he got two stickers AND a temporary tattoo. Upon filling in all the boxes on a row, Tommy earned prizes. A ruler (silly, but he’d been obsessed with the one on my desk, so he was really excited to get his own), a foam airplane (I think he’ll be buried with its fuselage), a map puzzle, a jar full of dinosaurs, and the holy grail…a trip to Chuck E. Cheese. He really didn’t care much to talk about the promised Disneyland trip, all he wanted was to go to Chuck E. Cheese.

Tommy\'s Awesome Potty Chart

Here’s a picture of his ink after a few days of wear…really cool, huge guitars on his forearms. He LOVES it when people ask him where he got his tattoos and gleefully replies, “BECAUSE I WENT PEEEEEEEE AND POOOOOOP IN THE TOILET!”

Tommy\'s toilet success reward tattoo

The first day was very tough, but the subsequent days improved dramatically. Here our Potty Prince poses with his favorite reward, a foam airplane that he completely destroyed and dismantled in less than 48 hours, and a toy light saber, which was his magic wand to give him a little courage when he was having trouble on the potty.

Tommy was so tired after a long day of potty training that he fell asleep at the kitchen table while I prepared dinner. He was OUT. Only the smell of Annie’s Organic Shells & Cheddar (which should be known as Mac Crack for the preschool set) brought him out of his coma.

Tommy snoozes before dinner

One week later we are still diaper-free. He’s doing great getting to the bathroom on his own volition. There have been accidents, usually involving a little guy who’s just way too busy playing or watching Mickey Mouse to bother with the potty, but they are becoming fewer and further between.

So, there you have everything you wanted to know about Tommy’s potty training but were afraid to ask. I can’t believe I just devoted so much time to writing about the experience, but it’s a…bad pun coming on…drop in the toilet (I warned you!) compared to the hours spent on the training itself.

Best Babysitter Ever!

Here Annalise smiles with our most favorite babysitter ever, Alecsa. The kids adore her and she does such a fantastic job taking care of them. I need to snap a picture of Tommy with her. I think she’s his first true love…he talks about her ALL the time and constantly asks to have her come over to play.

Tommy’s Summer Camp

Tommy’s attending summer day camp two mornings a week. He LOVES his teachers, Miss Gonzales and Ms. Lalli. Here he’s pictured with Miss Gonzales in the “Butterflies” classroom.

Each morning starts out with splashing and water play, so he gears up with his crocs, shades and SPF 50 before heading out the door.

Recently, Tommy became a member of the “Potty Train,” too. It’s a really cute way Miss G. motivates the little ones to use the toilet. Photo TBA.
