First Day of Preschool

Today Tommy attended his first day of preschool. Hard to believe he’s old enough to go to school already, but here he is! Doesn’t he look dapper in his little LVDS uniform?

Placing his new backpack in his classroom cubby.

Big smiles with Mrs. Toth. All weekend he kept commenting on how pretty she is!

A quick family snapshot before we said our goodbyes. No tears this year, just lots of smiles.

After I picked him up he talked nonstop about his new friend Johnny and the scrub-scrub song he sang when he washed his hands. He proudly showed me the Dora sticker his teacher placed on his hand and did NOT want it to be removed for any reason whatsoever. He told me that he colored with the brown crayon, his favorite color, and sure enough there was a fantastic brown drawing in his backpack when we got home.

All he wanted to do when he got home was race up to my room to watch Clifford on PBS. Once I got him settled I unpacked the rest of his bag and found this. (Click on the photo to enlarge the poem).

Way to make a mommy cry!

Six Years

Sunday James and I celebrated our sixth wedding anniversary. It hasn’t really been that long, has it? Time has certainly flown! To commemorate the occasion we enjoyed a nice dinner out at Fleming\’s and sipped on our last bottle of wine brought back from our honeymoon in Paris. The food was excellent (James arranged for a tasty chateaubriand), the wine divine and the company…who better to spend an evening with than your best friend? I love you, James! Here’s to six times six and then some more.

A quick look back…what a wonderful day it was!

Standing!

Our little girl is really on the move! Friday, August 22 she pulled to standing in our family room and she’s been unstoppable ever since.

She’s getting braver with every passing day, sometimes holding a toy in one hand while she pulls up with the other. Tommy didn’t walk until after his first birthday, but I have a feeling she won’t wait that long.

Now she’s trying a two-handed toy grab…

Rear view. Here you can kind of see the cute little curls that are forming in her hair.

Taking a Dip

Fun in the kiddie pool at Tamica’s house. Here she has a death grip on Kris’ wristwatch.

Ahhhhhhhhhh!

Tommy posing with M3′s toy plane, which he’s dubbed “Big Jet” and won’t put down as long as we’re at their house. He actually refused to go swimming so as not to forsake his precious time with Big Jet. Silly.

Meet the Teacher Day

Last Friday was Tommy’s “Meet the Teacher Day” at his new school, Las Vegas Day School. He met Mrs. Toth, his teacher and her assistants, Mrs. Spurlock and Mrs. Done. Wouldn’t you know…he found the classroom airplanes right away.

Practicing hammering with longtime pals Taylor & Logan. He’s been buddies with them since their newborn days, so it’s pretty cool that they’re in a class together.

With Mrs. Done. She’s from Oregon like Mommy!

Tommy found the trike on the playground and it was instant love. We think this new school will suit him just fine!

Enjoying a special lunch with just Mommy & Daddy. Annalise was at home with Alecsa so Tommy could have our full attention for this important day.

LA Festival of Sail

After a busy day at the beach, we ventured down to the Port of Los Angeles for the annual Festival of Sail. Tommy loved viewing the big “pirate ships,” posing as a pirate and exploring a few of the boats.

Jason & Patty’s Wedding

James and I left the kiddos with Cindy & Jeremy and drove from Redondo Beach down to Carlsbad (thanks to the lovely 405 it took THREE HOURS ON A SATURDAY!) to see James’ college pal, Jason, and his beautiful bride, Patty, tie the knot. Here we are with the happy couple.

Enjoying the reception. It was such a fun party!

We got back to Redondo Beach after midnight and found this precious little guy snoozing away.

Such an angel…when he’s sleeping.

Beach Trip

In mid-August we packed the kids into the ol’ gas guzzler and headed west to Redondo Beach. Here Annalise helps Daddy drive.

Tommy the back seat driver.

Enjoying dinner at Mimi’s in Victorville. Tommy can’t get enough of the meal-spoiling bread before his food arrives.

Annalise enjoys her “Busy Bread” before our meal.

Playing in Aunt Cindy & Uncle Jeremy’s living room before we head down to the beach.

Enjoying Hermosa Beach in the shade.

Bottled water is funny!

Not much of a swimmer…he prefered burying the stroller wheels in the sand.

Taking her first dip with Uncle J.

Lots of giggles when the waves came up.

Tommy & Alecsa

Tommy LOVES his babysitter, Alecsa. She’s definitely one of his favorite buddies and he loves to color and draw with her (or make her watch Cars or Top Gun with him for the zillionth time). Here they work on writing “letters” together.

Hugs and smiles!

Park & Port of Subs

As summer winds down (at least on the calendar…certainly not on the Las Vegas thermometers!) we have been having a lot of fun. The kids have enjoyed the park with friends, Tommy’s pictured here with pals Caroline & Addie at the park. The sandbox is a favorite spot.

Here Annalise takes in a little sun (with SPF 50) and explores the grass. I really wanted to pluck her off the dirty ground and strap her in the stroller to keep my little baby nice and clean, but I’ve got to get over that urge and let her discover her world.

And here the kids enjoy lunch at Tommy’s FAVORITE restaurant, Port of Subs.

Lemonade, Cheetos and Tommy’s “Elton John” sunglasses were on the menu that day. He’s such a goof.

Doesn’t this look like a little pirate face? She loves to share bites of her bro’s turkey sandwich and goldfish from home.

Pooh Returns

After a stint in the upstairs playroom, where he was ignored for many, many months, Tommy’s Winnie the Pooh chair has returned to the forefront of our family room scene. Annalise became intensely interested in scaling the shelves of the changing table, which you can see on the right, so it had to be moved for her safety. Pooh came back down because we simply don’t have enough crap cluttering this corner of the room.

Nah, he’s not really there just to add to the mess. You barely see it in this pic, but the changing table blocked the fireplace and, more importantly, the concrete hearth. So Pooh has been recruited to protect our precious baby’s noggin from the hearth. And give Tommy a super-comfy spot to watch Oswald, who, by the way, hasn’t given the chair a second look for two years…and now that Annalise is interested, he’s all about it. Of course.

Ladies Who Lunch…or Dinner

Kai & Annalise enjoyed a delicious dinner together at the Minor home last night. While their older brothers gulped Capri Sun, but scoffed at grilled hot dogs and mac & cheese (crazy boys!), the girls enjoyed their respective meals (in matching boosters!) to their fullest.

Yum!

Tommy Plays

Tommy’s had a fun summer. He attended summer camp two mornings a week at Shenker Academy, kept busy with trips to the Sahara West Library, the not-frequent-enough romp at the park (too hot!), and played with friends as often as we could. But, since we live in the scorching desert, we also spent a lot of time couped up in the house.

And avoided pants. This is his interpretation of Risky Business meets Top Gun…landing toy airplanes on his aircraft carrier while sporting the tighty whiteys. Move over, Tom Cruise! (Due to his love of all things airplane, he’s seen the latter movie…we’ll save the former for MANY years down the road)

Captain Underpants plays Risky-Business-meets-Top-Gun. Landing toy airplanes on the aircraft carrier while sporting the tighty whiteys.

He’s been into Etch-a-Sketch lately. I recently bought him the big classic red one, to increase his sketchin’ real estate. Most of his creations resemble stair steps, sometimes deliberately and precisely spaced.

 Etch-a-Sketch, you are the best.

We have escaped from the house a few times. In recent weeks we discovered the joy of Bounce U‘s open playtime. He bounces, jumps, runs, slides and just wears himself out. At the end of the hour-long session he is a sweaty mess, but he takes a GOOD nap that afternoon, which says a lot considering he’s eschews shuteye for the afternoon episode of Super Why! more often than not.

Preschool multi-tasking: shooting hoops while bouncing.

Getting wild with M3. These boys are inseparable.

Bouncing with Marshall

Let me out!

With Annalise’s newfound mobility the baby gates are back in full effect. Here she grabs hold of the bars at the top of the stairs. Tommy doesn’t like that his freedom is affected by the gates, but he’s getting better about asking for passage, and I’m sure he’ll find a way to catapult over them before we know it.
