I Pledge Allegiance…with Bonus line!

Tommy, along with his classmates, recites the Pledge of Allegiance each day at school. He’s always been quick to memorize things he hears over and over (lines from story books, the Lord’s Prayer, etc.), but the fact that he can say the whole thing kind of floors me. We were practicing yesterday while I was preparing dinner when he introduced me to the new-and-improved final line:

“…indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Now you may eat.”

Apparently, it is recited right before morning snack.

He’s been into politics lately, too. This morning I was watching a recording of last night’s presidential debate and he cuddled up on the couch with me, one eye on his I Spy: Treasure Hunt book. The phone rang, so I paused the TV to catch up with my sister-in-law and he said in a very firm voice, “I WANT BARACK OBAMA!” I giggled, but he was persistent (and sister was napping so I had to keep him quiet) so I let him hear more about Joe the Plumber. Then after dinner tonight I mentioned it was getting close to bath/bedtime…”Let’s watch John McCain now.” At least he’s giving equal time to the candidates.

In other news, Annalise has weaned herself from bottles entirely. One evening last week she was all kinds of fussy before bed, so I made her bottle thinking it would soothe her. Oh, no! I’d never seen her fly off the handle quite like this before, but she pushed the bottle away from her mouth, turned her head and grunted at me. We had been giving her formula in a sippy cup with meals for a few weeks and it seems she finally saw the light: infant formula, especially when warm, is N-A-S-T-Y. We’re working on our last can of the junk before we transition to cow’s milk.

And I’m definitely seeing a pattern with how messy our girl can be. Mealtimes almost always require a wardrobe change. At first I chalked this up to giving her more independence with feeding herself, but I really think she’s just an adorable, smiley little piggy! I serve it, she smears it in her hair or on her pants. Pumpkin pie has fantastic hold when used as a hair product. Dreading to see her room circa 2021.
