Videos!

It’s been way too long since I’ve shared videos of the kids, so here are several for you to enjoy. Most recent first, I think the final clip was taken back in September?

Making Music

Last weekend James brought home a surprise for the kids…a $5 yard sale toy keyboard. After I doused it with disinfectant I let them loose with it, eventually finding their favorite studio/stage in the kitchen. Dude, you might want to cover your ears:

And a few still shots of our little musicians. They do their best jammin’ in their jammies:

Wow, our kids are getting older fast! Tommy is now closer to age 4 than he is to age 3. He’s working on riding his bike. Daddy is still trying to convince him that pedaling is fun, though he seems to prefer the leisurely coast provided when James breaks his back bending over his little training bike to push it. He can write the whole alphabet with some coaching and is practicing A-J on his own. He likes to write TOM over and over, preferably on his Magnadoodle or with a big, brown crayon. He still loves Curious George, but now he’s interested in Harry Potter and keeps asking me why he doesn’t have an “N” on his head like Harry (the lightning bolt scar is fascinating to our little wizard!).

Our mealtime battles continue to be very tough. Breakfast is pretty easy with cereal and/or Nutrigrain bars and fresh fruit. Lunch is predictable: PB & J de-crusted with a fun cookie cutter, a cheese stick (it must be orange!) and some Cheez-It Party Mix. But dinner, Lord help me. He asks for a cheeseburger, then flips because there’s cheese on it. He requests mac & cheese then insists on chicken nuggets. When chicken nuggets are up they need ranch, then “there’s something missing on my plate” and if Veggie Booty doesn’t magically appear it’s meltdown time. But hey, two meals out of three ain’t bad. If he still has the energy to play he must be getting enough to eat. All I can do is offer him healthy choices and hope he puts them in his mouth eventually.

Annalise…she’s been a busy girl this month! November 7 she took her first three steps in our kitchen. She was trying to sneak into the dishwasher while I was unloading, so I closed the appliance door to keep her out, leaving her standing unsupported more than her usual arm’s length from the cabinetry. She teetered, she tottered, then she toddled…three big steps before she got a big “UH OH!” look on her face and carefully lowered herself to the ground. No more significant bipedal action until earlier this week. Now she’ll take a half-dozen steps here and there, but she still prefers the efficiency and speed crawling affords her.

Frankly, I don’t think she cares too much about walking because she’s far busier CLIMBING everything. And she finds all kinds of things to help her reach new heights. I think I mentioned a couple of months back that she likes to climb the stepstools by the bathroom sinks which allow Tommy handwashing access. She’s also figured out that if you dump the blocks out of the bin you can turn it upside down and stand on it, then climb onto the ottoman. Capsized laundry baskets make awesome pedestals. You can borrow the toy piano bench to reach up onto the kitchen countertop. Or just try to stand on the seat of your pink riding pony because it looks fun and will scare the dickens out of Mommy. All with a sweet, sheepish grin on her face.

She can also open doors. I wish we had regular doorknobs instead of levers for this reason. She seems to have a longer reach than I remember her brother having at this age, or perhaps just longer legs. Her 12M sized pants are starting to look like capris on her.

And Tooth #7 snuck in there somewhere. She lets me brush her teeth every day as long as I promise not too look, but she never lets me peek in her mouth. During a giggle-filled tickle session I caught a glimpse of white, so I pried her jaws open for a minute to find a brand new molar fully exposed on the bottom left. No wonder she was so cranky two weeks ago (I was looking for #7 & #8 to pop in up front). The other side is pretty swollen, so we should have a matching set soon. She is an angry, grumpy teether, so wish us luck!

More pictures tomorrow. How’d it get so late?

Parktime Fun

November brought us beautiful weather…temperatures were in the 70s up until the month’s very last day. We’ve been taking advantage of the sunny skies and hitting the neighborhood parks as often as we can. We even discovered a new playground not terribly far from our home, Mesa Park. It opened last month and both kids LOVE the play equipment and new surroundings. It even has a merry-go-round…the first I’ve seen in decades (I still need to get a picture of the kids on it).
Annalise is certainly a daredevil. She climbs quickly and fearlessly on the structures, tries to dive face-first down the slides and scoots around after Tommy as fast as her hands and knees can carry her (hence all her jeans are getting very ratty!). While brother was interested in exploring perimeters at 13 months, she’s all about gaining altitude — constantly seeking new peaks to conquer.

Halloween 2008

Super Wedewers! Tommy wanted to be a superhero this year, and since the rest of us didn’t really have a preference we followed suit. James and I were Super Lame and just got t-shirts. Here are some pics from this year’s festivities.

Sweet, Adorable Tommy

Age 3 1/2 certainly ain’t easy. But our young man has his moments of sweetness that erase all the frustration. Case in point, complete cheese-ball grin at the doctor’s office. He gets the biggest kick out of looking at the pictures right after I take them.

And here he issued a very kind invitation for Annalise to join him in their kitchen play cupboard. Didn’t know it had seating for anyone, let alone two! This new hiding spot has made their peekaboo games hilarious. Tommy gets in the cupboard, tells Annalise to close the door for him, which she does, and when she opens the door they giggle for five minutes straight. I’ll try to get a video soon.

Portland – 10.2008

Here are some pics from our trip to Portland in early October. We were all over the place! We stayed with Aunt Donna & Uncle Gary. Went to Bradi & Josh’s rehearsal dinner and wedding. Got to see Great Grandma Lucille. Had a fun visit to OMSI with Jess, Henry, Sarah & Kelton. The kids went to Grandpa Rick\’s farm for a night so James & I could attend the wedding. We also had a nice visit with Grandma Renee, Great Grandma Rosemary, Aunt Denise & Uncle Joe. And we rounded out the trip with a nice lunch at Izzy\’s Pizza, which was a huge hit with Tommy & Annalise.

I’ll add captions as time allows, but seeing as it’s taken me a month to post this much it might not be right away!

I Pledge Allegiance…with Bonus line!

Tommy, along with his classmates, recites the Pledge of Allegiance each day at school. He’s always been quick to memorize things he hears over and over (lines from story books, the Lord’s Prayer, etc.), but the fact that he can say the whole thing kind of floors me. We were practicing yesterday while I was preparing dinner when he introduced me to the new-and-improved final line:

“…indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Now you may eat.”

Apparently, it is recited right before morning snack.

He’s been into politics lately, too. This morning I was watching a recording of last night’s presidential debate and he cuddled up on the couch with me, one eye on his I Spy: Treasure Hunt book. The phone rang, so I paused the TV to catch up with my sister-in-law and he said in a very firm voice, “I WANT BARACK OBAMA!” I giggled, but he was persistent (and sister was napping so I had to keep him quiet) so I let him hear more about Joe the Plumber. Then after dinner tonight I mentioned it was getting close to bath/bedtime…”Let’s watch John McCain now.” At least he’s giving equal time to the candidates.

In other news, Annalise has weaned herself from bottles entirely. One evening last week she was all kinds of fussy before bed, so I made her bottle thinking it would soothe her. Oh, no! I’d never seen her fly off the handle quite like this before, but she pushed the bottle away from her mouth, turned her head and grunted at me. We had been giving her formula in a sippy cup with meals for a few weeks and it seems she finally saw the light: infant formula, especially when warm, is N-A-S-T-Y. We’re working on our last can of the junk before we transition to cow’s milk.

And I’m definitely seeing a pattern with how messy our girl can be. Mealtimes almost always require a wardrobe change. At first I chalked this up to giving her more independence with feeding herself, but I really think she’s just an adorable, smiley little piggy! I serve it, she smears it in her hair or on her pants. Pumpkin pie has fantastic hold when used as a hair product. Dreading to see her room circa 2021.

No Cavities! (and a funny story)

Tommy visited his dentist, Dr. Kinner, today. He was very cooperative while the hygienist cleaned his teeth and helped her count all 20 of them. He enjoyed thumbing through an “I Spy” book while we waited for the doctor and was such a brave boy for the exam. He also reported that Annalise only has five teeth, so she doesn’t have to see the dentist yet.

No, he’s not sedated in this picture, I just didn’t get a very good shot of him in the chair.

Big, bright light on his face.

So, here’s the funny story. After an exam at Dr. Kinner’s office, patients get to pick a prize from a treasure chest full of toys (the office is a nautical theme). Tommy always pains over this decision, then chooses the same pair of binoculars that break before the sun goes down. Today was no different but he got a little flustered that another boy was choosing a toy at the same time and went to go shut the lid of the treasure chest. In doing so, he unexpectedly squished his boy parts and started crying. He told me with tears streaming down his cheeks, “I hurt my Jingle Bells!”

He’s OK. But that was the funniest thing I’ve heard in a very long time!

Thumbs Up to Princesses and Ponies

I think we really, truly have a little girly-girl on our hands. Annalise recently discovered princesses, ponies and pink. She probably would have been content playing with Tommy’s Hot Wheels, airplanes and race tracks her entire childhood, but I figured it was time to buy her some of her OWN toys. Why not make them pink?

Here she GRINS with her new princess sippy cup. I think that’s a thumbs up sign!

Posing with her very first My Little Pony, Strawberry Swirl.

Tommy shows Annalise HIS first My Little Pony, Toola-Roola. I think I’ll buy a whole stable full, as they actually play really well together with them.

So the story behind how the ponies made it into our house. We were at Toys R Us, with the goal of finding a Barbie for a friend of Tommy’s, when my eyes caught on a My Little Pony display that nearly reached the rafters. Apparently it’s their 25th anniversary this year. My heart melted, as they were my FAVORITE toys growing up. I said to Tommy, “Forget Barbie, your pal is getting some ponies!” This statement piqued Tommy’s interest and he asked, “Can I get a pony, Mommy?” And I replied, “OF COURSE YOU CAN! Choose one for you and one for Annalise, Sweetie!” James wasn’t thrilled to find his son playing with a “girl” toy, but I’m sure excited to have them in the house. I’m thinking about calling my childhood friends, Karla and Brandi, to see if they want to come over to play…with me!

Happy Kids

Here are a few shots of our happy kiddos. They’re so full of smiles…especially little Lisey.

Tommy’s First Library Card

Tommy got his first library card in early September. He was having one of his “I MUST wear my big, ridiculous, Elton John sunglasses everywhere” days. His favorite kinds of books are airplanes (of course), Mickey Mouse and Curious George. He has also taken a liking to flipping through the comic books on display.

Here he and Annalise enjoy storytime at the library. I think we lasted all of five minutes before we had to get up and leave!

First Day of Preschool

Today Tommy attended his first day of preschool. Hard to believe he’s old enough to go to school already, but here he is! Doesn’t he look dapper in his little LVDS uniform?

Placing his new backpack in his classroom cubby.

Big smiles with Mrs. Toth. All weekend he kept commenting on how pretty she is!

A quick family snapshot before we said our goodbyes. No tears this year, just lots of smiles.

After I picked him up he talked nonstop about his new friend Johnny and the scrub-scrub song he sang when he washed his hands. He proudly showed me the Dora sticker his teacher placed on his hand and did NOT want it to be removed for any reason whatsoever. He told me that he colored with the brown crayon, his favorite color, and sure enough there was a fantastic brown drawing in his backpack when we got home.

All he wanted to do when he got home was race up to my room to watch Clifford on PBS. Once I got him settled I unpacked the rest of his bag and found this. (Click on the photo to enlarge the poem).

Way to make a mommy cry!

Taking a Dip

Fun in the kiddie pool at Tamica’s house. Here she has a death grip on Kris’ wristwatch.

Ahhhhhhhhhh!

Tommy posing with M3′s toy plane, which he’s dubbed “Big Jet” and won’t put down as long as we’re at their house. He actually refused to go swimming so as not to forsake his precious time with Big Jet. Silly.
