A humanoid robot would look like a human being, much like Data on Star Trek, The Next Generation. In Aldiss' future, humanoid robots have a kind of "synthetic flesh" made possible by "sophisticated biochemics." We could imagine that both David and the serving man were so lifelike in appearance that it was difficult to distinguish the real humans from the humanoids.
